Tomio Koyama Gallery is pleased to present a simultaneous exhibition of works by Rieko Hidaka at both the gallery’s Kyobashi and Roppongi locations. This marks the artist’s sixth solo exhibition with the gallery, and her first in eight years. For over 40 years throughout her practice, Rieko Hidaka has continued to gaze up at trees, branches, and leaves—observing, sensing, and depicting their relationship with the sky that stretches out beyond them. Presented across two venues, this exhibition features works from “Retirement Exhibition: Space, natural light, painting,” held last year at Art-Theque, Tama Art University Archive Center. This marks a new experiment and challenge for Hidaka: to see how the works from her retirement exhibition—originally arranged in a spacious setting illuminated solely by natural light—will appear and be perceived in galleries of different lighting and spatial dimensions. Also featured in this exhibition are original drawings used as illustrations for the Asahi Shimbun’s tanka and haiku poetry submission columns “Kadan/Haidan,” as well as for the culture section of the Sunday morning edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. On the opening day of the exhibition, the book Rieko Hidaka: Space, natural light, painting (Photographs: Risaku Suzuki; Texts: Noi Sawaragi; Design: Yuri Suyama) will be published by torch press and go on sale at the gallery.*A talk event featuring those involved in the book’s production will also be held during the exhibition period. This exhibition presents a solo show by painter and illustrator Momoko Nakamura, opening on Saturday, October 24, 2026.Momoko Nakamura was born in Tokyo in 1991. Following her career at a graphic design agency, she currently presents her work primarily across Japan and Asia. While taking on a wide range of projects including book illustrations, advertising, and apparel, she has consistently created motifs of creature-like flora and expressionless women, drawing inspiration from her daily emotions and thoughts.Having recently experienced the major life milestone of childbirth, Nakamura is continuing to expand her expressive range while navigating the transformations of her own mind and body. In this exhibition, she presents a series of new works that distill the authentic sensations experienced through pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting—extracted from journals, memos, and everyday records—and translate them onto canvas.New feelings sprouting within, paired with the daily mysteries of unfolding life. KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present Noritaka Tatehana’s solo exhibition “Heel-less Shoes” at the Kyobashi gallery from October 30 to December 12, 2026. Research into Japanese culture was the starting point for the creation of Heel-less Shoes, not a concept for a particular sculpture or form. Specializing in textile arts at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Tatehana came to realize that traditions are more than conservative customs; they represent the result of innovation. This led him to study the attire and culture of oiran (courtesans) during the Edo period. As fashion pioneers of their time, the oiran set trends that were emulated by the young women in town and spread throughout society. Unlike the institutionalized forms of expression seen with Kabuki costumes, this culture formed organically from urban life, and could be described as a purely avant-garde development. Therefore, Tatehana’s Heel-less Shoes series is a product of the artist’s research of tradition, rather than something that was inspired by it.Noritaka Tatehana’s solo exhibition “Heel-less Shoes” consists of over thirty works, focusing primarily on twenty-two pairs of Heel-less Shoes, and including the artist’s latest paintings.

No values or perspectives emerge out of nowhere overnight; they are born through the workings of some collective entity, or by riding the currents of history—either aligning with them or swimming against them. A unique kind of potency can indeed reside in objects and phenomena amid such continuity. It is precisely because we live in a world where, paradoxically, unimaginable events unfold daily in various places, that we present a group exhibition at the Kyobashi gallery that intentionally focuses on this very continuity, which perhaps is best described as a “modern sensibility” of sorts.

In this 21st exhibition, KOSAKU KANECHIKA, TOMIO KOYAMA GALLERY, and Yutaka Kikutake Gallery will present the special group exhibition ART POTLUCK, KYOBASHI from Saturday, September 12, 2026.Building on last year's special exhibition Tokyo Gendai 58min, this year's edition welcomes Yutaka Kikutake Gallery as a new participant, expanding the collaboration to three galleries. The exhibition's renewed title, ART POTLUCK, KYOBASHI, takes its name from the English tradition of a "potluck" — a gathering where each participant brings a dish to share. Three galleries, each with a distinct curatorial eye and roster of artists, come together to bring (invite) the next generation of talent from their own perspectives — a structure this single word captures at its core.Tokyo Gendai 2026 (September 11 (Fri) – 13 (Sun), 2026) will be held concurrently with this exhibition. We look forward to welcoming you during this occasion, when the international art community gathers in Tokyo.

KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present Ryu Takeda’s solo exhibition “Miner’s Fog” at our Kyobashi gallery from July 31 to September 19, 2026.This exhibition presents paintings, the artist’s primary medium in recent years, together with ceramic works, another medium that plays a vital role in his practice. While Takeda’s paintings remain the core focus, wall-mounted reliefs and three-dimensional works are also interspersed throughout the gallery, creating a composition that traverses the boundaries between two and three-dimensional forms. For Takeda, ceramics is not merely an experimental medium―it is an act that reaffirms the physicality essential to his paintings. Takeda, who has been very familiar with the use of clay since his childhood, notes, “Even when I am painting, I somehow get the feeling that I am molding.” True to this feeling, in addition to the drawings he creates in preparation for his paintings, he also keeps personal notes in which he records the tactile feedback and sense of volume he experiences when carving clay. These notes capture the pure sensations he feels with his hands as he sculpts forms, and not a preconceived image of the finished work.We cordially invite you to Ryu Takeda’s solo exhibition “Miner’s Fog,” featuring approximately fifteen new paintings and ceramic works.

Tomio Koyama Gallery Kyobashi is pleased to present Yuko Someya’s solo exhibition “Soil and Stars.” This marks the artist’s sixth solo exhibition—and their first in two years—with the gallery, showcasing a collection centered around new works. In recent years, Yuko Someya relocated her home and studio to Okayama Prefecture. The area in which she resides, known as “Hiokidani” (日置谷), translates literally to “sun-placed valley” (with the character 日 meaning “sun,” 置 meaning “to place/put,” and 谷 meaning “valley”). This exhibition presents works that the artist created while living among those mountains and valleys, and while grounded in the earth’s soil. Yuko Someya is an artist who has developed a unique and new style of expression, intertwining familiar landscapes with memories from her own childhood, experiences of lie changes, and fundamental aspects of life, such as death, birth, and nature. Her fantastical artworks, where various flora and fauna intermingle, in all their vibrancy could be described as contemporary renditions of the traditional bird-and-flower painting. However, the new works presented in this exhibition, while building upon those past expressions, were born from an engagement with nature that far transcends the artist’s own imagination. The exhibition reveals the sincere dedication of the artist, who strives to translate into their work, a profound sense of reality born from a keen sensibility cultivated through living in harmony with nature. We hope visitors will take this opportunity to witness Someya’s latest artistic endeavors.

Machi Sugita was born in Saitama Prefecture in 2000. She has long expressed an ideal world where "light" created by humans and "signboards" that guide people's paths coexist. In recent years, her interest has shifted toward domestic social issues and "borders" within Japan. By personally visiting various locations, she continues to capture the memories and history of those lands, as well as the relationships between people, flora, and fauna.Following her previous solo exhibitions held in 2025, "BORDER" and "Standing on the Border, Catching the Reflected Light," her exploration deepens even further in this latest exhibition, "TOMOSHIBI."This exhibition features a new series of works in which she brings together "fragments of landscapes" encountered during her travels onto single canvases. While re-examining "borders," we hope you will experience the neon lights that resemble hope stretching eternally like a straight road, as well as the underlying realities hidden within that light. We cordially invite you to experience her work firsthand at the venue.

KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present Yutaka Aokiʼs solo exhibition, “Knots and Pebbles,” at our Kyobashi gallery from June 12 to July 25, 2026.The exhibition unfolds as an exploration into the spatial and temporal reorganization of painting, using the square as its fundamental unit. Each individual work visualizes the inherent dynamism latent within this foundational square unit, manifesting it as a transformation within space. This structural concept extends beyond mere form and composition, suggesting that painting is an entity that encapsulates time and remains in perpetual motion. In the galleryʼs smaller room, large-scale square works are positioned to visually establish this principle. Conversely, in the larger room, smaller works are arranged in an ensemble, allowing dynamic structures to permeate the entire space.By reversing the designated entrance and exit of the venue, the exhibition also intervenes in the temporal directionality of the viewing experience. As visitors move through the gallery, shifting their perspective with every step, the shape of the space appears to be both “a part of something” as well as “all of it.” This approach challenges the conventional static painting, prompting a transformation in the viewer’s perception. We cordially invite you to visit Yutaka Aoki’s “Knots and Pebbles,” featuring approximately ten works, including large-scale pieces and several set works.

Kako Shirahata (b. 2002, Osaka) attempts to reconstruct images in pictorial space that superimpose her own features onto female forms in classical art and contemporary visual culture. Shirahata’s explorations transforming female representation from something that is seen into a subject that is shown began after observing the way images of young performers are manipulated through AI technologies and continuously consumed as objects of others’ desires in online spaces. Her practice of immersing herself within existing images, or superimposing existing female figures onto herself, is a methodology that arose out of an urge to partially assume the burden of the desirous gaze that these women are constantly subjected to. Shirahata positions this approach, which aims to reconstruct these types of images, as an attempt to expand notions of the female form to include connotations of the ancient mystical gesture of anasyrma. If systems of representation can be understood as having shaped our world in conjunction with power dynamics, then Shirahata’s efforts to immerse herself in existing female representations—reinforcing and reconstructing them, and presenting them to society anew—also seem to imply an intervention in the very framework of these systems and structures. Kako Shiarahata’s first solo exhibition at Yutaka Kikutake Gallery showcases her current interests and efforts through a series of new works, including a large horizontal canvas with three female figures side-by-side, work featuring a new approach that superimposes multiple expressions onto a single figure, and the visceral depictions of her Flower series.

Daisuke Tajima is an artist known for depicting imaginary megacities through meticulous detail and exaggerated perspectives. This exhibition explores the chaos of an accelerating modern society and the individuals living within its "interstices," featuring a selection of both new and earlier works. In a world of homogenized existence where overflowing information and commodities emerge only to vanish, Tajima vividly captures the "suffocating energy" felt within infinitely multiplying systems and the underlying sense of "emptiness."We invite you to experience the trajectory of solitude and happiness projected through his overwhelming density of expression.

In this exhibition, along with self-portraits projecting the character socks that artist Lotta continues to draw, a group of works with rich storylines will be presented.“Utopia,” which is also the title of this exhibition, means a utopia, a dreamy world, and the “concept of happiness” that people constantly pursue. We will be presenting a group of new works that express such a “utopia” with perspectives and colors unique to artist Lotta. The venue will be wrapped in Lotta's world view itself so as to gently invite visitors. When you come into contact with the artist's sensibility that overflows from the canvas and spreads throughout the space, a “utopia” separated from everyday life appears there. Please take this opportunity to take a look.

Tomio Koyama Gallery Kyobashi is pleased to present “Day, Night,” the first solo exhibition in Japan by Korean artist Ahn Jisan, featuring a selection of his new paintings.Ahn Jisan was born in Busan, South Korea in 1979. After graduating from the Korea National University of Arts in 2006, he studied painting at the Frank Mohr Institute in the Netherlands. From 2013, he spent two years in residence at the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten in the Netherlands. Following solo exhibitions in the Netherlands, he returned to Seoul in 2015 and began his artistic career in South Korea. His works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (South Korea), the Daegu Art Museum (South Korea), and the Royal Academy of Art (Netherlands) among others.Ahn Jisan’s paintings evoke an atmosphere of anxiety marked by a sensation of confinement, oppression, chaos, and fear, while his exceptional knack for composition, dramatic use of light, and meticulous yet powerful brushwork come together as a strong enticement to the viewer’s gaze.Is the world we see truly real? Night and day constantly repeat and shift. We hope that you will take advantage of this valuable opportunity to discover new perspectives on everyday life.

KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present Tenki Hiramatsu’s solo exhibition “Sweat and Tears” at its Tennoz and Kyobashi galleries from April 25 to June 6, 2026.Hiramatsu begins painting without predetermined motifs. His work is defined by a process in which he identifies the point of convergence of chance and necessity that emerges from abstract backgrounds that may appear entirely unrelated, or from chaotic compositions born of improvisational brushwork and layered color. Traversing freely across personal memories, experiences, imagination, and art-historical references, he subsequently discerns and uncovers concrete motifs―such as human figures―within his evolving visual landscapes. The title of this solo exhibition, “Sweat and Tears,” was chosen to reflect an urgent draw towards the intensity imbued by a sense of physical immediacy. What form will Hiramatsu’s decisions―made with quiet determination despite the intensity of the moment―and the traces they leave behind take as this dialogue comes to a close? The exhibition presents Hiramatsu’s current creative endeavors at both gallery spaces. The Kyobashi venue features approximately 10 works, focused primarily on paintings.

Okuda Yuta, born in 1987 in Aichi Prefecture, studied fashion design in Japan and England, then worked as a designer, and became an artist in 2016. Since then, I have actively participated in solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad, and have continued to produce and present. In recent years, I have mainly created flower series incorporating “coincidences,” such as the flow and bleeding of paint. Okuda's work is a major appeal of Okuda's work because of the strong strokes and the expression in which the movement of the paint is echoed by the delicate line drawn with the pen on the same screen. Also, with TODA BUILDING, which is the venue for this exhibition, Okuda's works were printed on a large scale in a temporary enclosure set up during the construction of the building, and there was an opportunity to be seen by many passers-by. This exhibition can also be said to be a place where relationships with such construction processes are reconnected. In this exhibition, we will be exhibiting paintings with flower bouquets as motifs, centering on the “With Concerns” series. In the soft air where you can feel the arrival of spring, vivid and fresh bouquet works will create a gorgeous exhibition space at the venue. Please take this opportunity to take a look at the venue.

Nanami Saito was born in Osaka in 1996, and currently lives and works in Tokyo. Employing techniques such as entwining wire netting used for pest control around clay before firing, she has produced ceramic works that explore the sense of traversing between nature, manmade objects, and her own body, using that sensation as a starting point to address the distance and relationships between them. Saito’s artistic practice is underpinned by extensive field work that is carried out not only within Japan but also overseas. Inspired by her cultural anthropological interest in sacred sites such as the vast forests of Yakushima, the stone circles of the British Isles, and Balinese religious rituals, in recent years she has expanded the scope of her artistic expression, with the glaze effects and forms of the works taking on organic characteristics. This exhibition presents new works rooted in the artist’s more personal experiences, centering on the motif of a “lemon tree,” which she spent around two years living with after relocating from the Kansai to Kanto region, as well as the results of her fieldwork at Mount Osore in Aomori Prefecture.

Taka Ishii Gallery Kyobashi is pleased to present a two-person exhibition of the works of Ser Serpas and Rafik Greiss, from Saturday, Mar 21 to Saturday, Apr 25. For Serpas, who often invites another artist or performer to participate in her presentation, this will be the second time to collaborate with Greiss, following their exhibition at the Swiss Institute in New York, 2023. This show will feature Serpas’ sculptural works, her new paintings, and Greiss’ photographic work and installations. The idea stems from their experience in cities where contractor trucks, loaded with used panels and discarded objects, passed by. Sometimes those objects seemed as though they had been thrown down from balconies, bringing about questions such as where they came from, where they were headed, and what the days might be like for the contractors.

KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present Junko Oki’s solo exhibition “STILL” at the Kyobashi gallery from March 7 to April 18, 2026.Through unique embroidery and careful attention, Junko Oki inserts new life into used textiles and instruments. These objects, with years-worth of stories already engraved into them, are revived by Okiʼs hand through a series of attentive stitches. Presenting some of her largest work to date, working with large and unique materials has prompted the artist to recalibrate her process, sketching on an image of the material and making overlapping stitches to resemble brushstrokes. The dialogue with the material is unique to each piece of material involved, and Oki refers to this process as an intertwining of new and old times. They include everything that came into being, and chronologies that once existed but are now gone. At the core of Oki’s creative process is a discovery of new horizons through layered impressions of time.We invite you to attend Junko Okiʼs solo exhibition “STILL,” which features ten new works.

This exhibition features photographic works from her new series “Entendue,” which is centered on memories of her own father and elephants. It also includes the premiere screening of her new film The Brush in your Hand, and an installation that makes use of the film’s set. The Brush in your Hand is also scheduled to be screened at Le Studio, the reservation-only mini-theater at Ginza Maison Hermès Le Forum.Charlotte Dumas’ latest works explore the ways in which memory and creativity are handed down and inherited.Although this is a personal theme, it evokes a warm sense of empathy in viewers through the universal motifs of family memories and animals. At the same time, by using family and animals as touchstones, it offers us an opportunity to deepen our reflections on the differences and commonalities found in both others and oneself, and in relation to the theme of coexistence. We hope you will take this opportunity to visit the exhibition.

Born in 1994 in Saitama Prefecture, The artist completed his master's degree at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School. Until now, I have been working on creating paintings and sculptures by thinking about gaps that seem to be indirect transmission of information between people, such as modern visual experiences and senses, individual symbolization, and multi-layered communication with people associated with the spread of the internet. It was collected by the Tokyo University of the Arts University Art Museum in 2019, was selected for the Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art in 2023, and won the Nomura Art Award in 2026, and has continued activities such as being selected as Mr. O Memorial Scholarship, Kuma Foundation 4th Term Scholarship, Sato International Cultural Education Foundation Scholarship, and Kamiyama Foundation Scholarship. This exhibition document / skin is an exhibition structure that combines works created in master's and doctoral programs in addition to new paintings. Born in 2000, Sanada Shotaro is an young generation artist with numerous achievements at a his age, winning Art Olympia 2022 and Best Debutant of the Year 2025, and has worked on large murals at JR Nagano Station and Ueno Station and artwork for Google Japan. He has created creative abstract paintings on the theme of the relationship between the “smartphone screen (information environment)” that modern people face every day and the “substance” called painting. The exhibition "FOR" connects the "scroll"—a symbol of modern life—with the "vertical brushstrokes" of painting. From the moment we wake, we reach for our smartphones, our thumbs endlessly tracing the screen in a vertical motion. Shotaro Sanada transforms this unconscious physical action into the strokes of his painting practice. By anchoring "gravity" and "time" onto the canvas through his unique interpretation, he presents a "new landscape" for the digital society. In addition to showcasing Sanada’s largest-scale canvas works to date, this exhibition features a curation by the artist himself that unfolds his creative and thought processes throughout the venue. It's been a little over half a century since the very first home video game console appeared on the market. From the simple pixel art drawings of the past to the gorgeous Hollywood-level visuals and graphics of today, video games have brought to life countless new digital worlds. In fact, one might say that the games that have so permeated our lives and become a part of our collective popular culture have evolved into a comprehensive form of art that blends the realms of technology and human expression in a way that displays the creativity and individuality of their creators.Since its founding in 1983, Capcom has grown to become a global game maker based in Osaka and has developed numerous titles that have brought joy to countless people around the world.Through hand-written design documents, original drawings, posters, box art and other graphical works, along with hands-on corners featuring the latest technology, this exhibition will showcase the intensive process of game creation and the incredible powers of imagination and actualization of the creators involved in bringing what they imagine to life. By investing in such a showing of what goes on behind the scenes, Capcom aims to create a space for people to re-examine Japan's proud gaming culture.

Funo elaborately and boldly develops her works as if sublimating the experiences, sensations, and emotions of her own life into a new world that transcends time and space.A major characteristic of Funo’s work is the way in which she covers the initial image she has depicted with layers of paint and then paints over it with new motifs. The subtle interrelationships between these different hidden layers creates an elegant complexity. Of this, the artist states, “Things that existed long ago, things that most people no longer remember are sealed within the image, and these become the substance from which new stories arise.” In creating her works for this exhibition, Funo expressed her interest in “encompassing different timelines.”As with her new painting The Phases of the Moon, a number of circles can be observed in her recent works. While she had painted them subconsciously, she came to the realization that they may in fact be moons. From there, she consciously painted the moon, which shines its light while moving from place to place, repeatedly within the same image as if to “encompass different timelines.”Fish Seed, Fruit Bones, and Things I Forget as Time Passes is a title inspired by her son’s verbal mistakes and reflects the artist’s desire to preserve the growth and precious memories of her young child—those bittersweet days filled with love—in their entirety. Although both works depict similar trees, these are almost all “conceptual trees” inspired by the endearing round shapes of pine trees and mistletoe found near the artist’s home yet painted without any preliminary sketches and without actual observation.

Tamura was born in 1989 in Osaka. Tamura's works are born from small feelings of incongruity and discovery hidden in everyday scenes. By taking motifs related to transportation and urban infrastructure, such as asphalt, road signs, and car mirrors, and separating them from their original context and function, they have given a completely new meaning and presence. With a keen eye for observation, reliable technology, and a sense of play, we are reconstructing familiar things from a poetic and critical perspective. Also, Tamura focuses on scenes and objects that are overlooked in everyday life, scoops up the ambiguity and uncertainty they have, and transforms them into works with quiet humor and romance. This practice is a critical look at modern society, and at the same time, it is also an attempt to awaken the senses and memories we have in our everyday lives. This exhibition consists of two series: a two-dimensional work of “Record of the Road Itself Rediymade (Road)” and a three-dimensional work of “The Concept of the Road TORNCEPT (Unknown Road).” Be sure to experience the accidental discoveries hidden in Tamura's works inspired by everyday scenes at the venue.

In Monteiro’s paintings, clusters of pigment comprising small dots and thin lines express a sense of materiality against vividly colored fields of pink, orange, yellow, and blue. His sculptures, on the other hand, are created by molding malleable clay that appears to be on the verge of collapsing and then casting it in bronze or aluminum.Brazilian artist Paulo Monteiro (b. 1961) creates paintings, drawings, and sculptures in vivid colors with a rich, minimalist sensibility. He has been garnering international attention in recent years: a major retrospective was held at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo in 2008, while the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York acquired 12 of his works in 2014.His body of work traverses the boundaries that lie between figuration and abstraction, embodying an enigmatic sense of materiality and dynamism. These pieces connect and resonate with one another through a finely balanced sense of spatial distance. These works are akin to constellations, musical scores, or dance movements. While each of these works entails its own unique existence, their appearance shifts depending on their position, viewing angle, and distance. Viewers will find joy in discovering the distinctive characteristics and differences in the color, form, and scale of each piece.

Shimada was born in 1995 in Tokyo. Based on photographs that have been processed and edited using digital devices such as smartphones and tablet terminals, we produce them using the method of drawing them with oil paint. Smartphones spread rapidly when I was a student studying art, and the environment for taking and processing photographs on a daily basis became ready, so naturally I began to make sketches with digital tools. The feeling that painting is an extension of photo editing was very natural in Shimada from the beginning, and he says that distortions, noises, light bleeding, and color deviations that cannot be captured with the naked eye can appear in the world seen through a smartphone or computer screen. They are not simply technical bugs or errors, but they are viewed as a new reality in the present day = “new reality,” and I have a strong interest in transferring such accidental visual information into paintings through the material medium called oil paint. In recent years, we have been exploring how far it is possible to reproduce the luminescence and glossy texture of a liquid crystal screen on analog canvases, and by daring to use the classical method of oil painting, which has strong material properties, we are exploring points of contact with the immaterial texture of digital images and the tension that arises between them.At first, portraits were the main theme, but now we are advancing a more compositional and experimental approach while expanding motifs to include the Morandi series, which depicts pots, flowers, still lifes, and landscapes. This exhibition will present a group of paintings centered around new works, including up to 120 works. We would be happy if you could visit us.

HOKUSAI — the most famous Japanese artist in the world. His iconic image The Great Wave off Kanagawa is a masterpiece often mentioned alongside Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, and is instantly recognizable across the globe. Hokusai is known not only for producing over 30,000 artworks during his 90-year life, but also for his free-spirited lifestyle — moving house 93 times and using more than 30 different art names. At a time when only paper and brush were available, his expressive innovations laid the foundation for what has become a worldwide phenomenon: Japan's entertainment culture, especially manga and anime. This exhibition is realized upon the full cooperation of Mr. Mitsuru Uragami (Uragami Sokyu-do), owner of the world's largest and high-quality collection of Hokusai Manga, comprising 1,700 volumes. The exhibition showcases all 15 volumes of Hokusai Manga from the renowned Uragami Collection, along with a wide range of illustrated"yomihon"novels, the iconic Great Wave off Kanagawa from Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, and the complete three-volume, 102-print series One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji, a late-life masterpiece created by the self-proclaimed"mad painter".In addition, the exhibition features 16 hand-drawn works, never before shown to public anywhere in the world. More than 400 works will be on display in total, showcased through a fresh and innovative exhibition design that highlights elements considered foundational to today's manga and anime—such as speed lines, comedic stylization, and anime-style key frames. It will be a rare opportunity to truly experience the"craft of Hokusai"from 200 years ago.

The origin of "manga" and "anime" lies in Hokusai!

KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to announce two solo exhibitions by Noritaka Tatehana, “Sacred Reflections” at our Tennoz gallery from October 4 to November 15, 2025, and “Obsession” at our Kyobashi gallery from October 11 to November 22, 2025.The two simultaneous solo exhibitions have contrasting characteristics. One embodies the active work of NORITAKA TATEHANA STUDIO, which the artist established the year he graduated from university based on a studio approach, focusing on the theme of reconstructing Japanese culture. The other exhibition showcases works rooted in Tatehana’s personal memories and interests. In contrast to the creations produced with others at his studio, Tatehana’s show “Obsession” in Kyobashi only features original paintings created by the artist alone. By returning to the most primitive method of engaging with art after a fifteen-year career since graduating from university, Tatehana is providing an opportunity to reexamine the path he has taken and the origins of his practice. This show will present about 10 works.

The 12th Tokyo 8 minute exhibition, a new solo exhibition “Slowing Down and Recovery” by artist Naka Erika will be held from 2025/10/18 (Sat).Naka was born in Komoro, Nagano. Fragments of symbols scattered throughout modern society are incorporated into paintings, and the simultaneous meanings and diachronic meanings of symbols are questioned through their reconstruction. Thick layers of acrylic paint often deviate from the artist's control and create an inevitable “gap” between it and the support. This contingency is an opportunity to visualize the arbitrariness of symbols and fluctuations in meaning. Until now, he has vigorously presented his work both domestically and internationally, and has received the CAF Shiraishi Masami Award (2018) and Wonder Seed Selection (2017). For Naka, this exhibition is the largest exhibition in Japan so far, and it commemorates the 1st anniversary of the opening of Tokyo 8 minutes. We will mainly be presenting a group of new works that combine major works equivalent to 120 issues and new series. Furthermore, to commemorate this exhibition, exhibition commemorative goods will also be sold at the venue. I hope everyone can enjoy this exhibition.

Miwa was born in 1993 in Nagoya, Aichi. Originating from the purpose of “drawing what you see as it is,” I am currently researching pictorial expressions in the process of receiving and processing visual information, the act of observational depiction expanded by modern technology, and “distance” in various meanings between target information and the observer, and presenting paintings. This exhibition is Miwa's largest exhibition to date. The exhibition is scheduled to be composed mainly of over 50 oil paintings, including the largest 100. Kudo perceives everyday scenery and objects that are often overlooked with her unique sensibility, constructing images through her own emotions and memories. She then depicts the grand narratives that seem to radiate from everyday life on her canvas, using an expressive idiom replete with vibrant color that is dynamic yet delicate.Regarding the title of this exhibition, “Seeing With Myself,” as well as her new works, Kudo says: “I still feel as if my past self, who has been to many places, is still faintly there, so I created these works in the hope that viewers would be able to look at this scenery as if they were doing so with their past selves.”Even the same person in the same place can appear dramatically illuminated or clearly defined depending on the passage of time and the angle of the light. The interplay of landscapes and emotions, visible and invisible elements, and opposing entities brings one’s existence into sharp focus. Kudo’s works convey how such a profound dialogue with daily life can transform the world and bring its radiant energy to the surface. We hope you will take the opportunity to visit this exhibition.

Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present “Boundaries and Coexistence”, an exhibition of works by Kunié Sugiura, from Saturday, July 19 to Saturday, August 23, 2025. Known for her fluid movement across multiple media, Sugiura resists framing contrasts—between Japan and the US, nature and artificiality, painting and photography—as binary opposites. Instead, she allows them to coexist in a state of tension, articulating her bicultural identity with both subtlety and clarity. Her practice positions photography as an art form as flexible and expressive as painting or sculpture. Spanning two venues, in Roppongi and Kyobashi, the exhibition traces the arc of Sugiura’s decades-long career.

KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present Yosuke Takeda’s solo exhibition “Lost in Translation” from July 5th to August 9th, 2025 at Kyobashi. In his practice, Yosuke Takeda investigates what is possible with the medium of photography. In his acclaimed “Digital Flare” series, he captures the phenomenon of flares that appear when a digital camera is facing a strong light. Rather than a genuine subject captured by the camera’s system, a flare is something that emerges from the relationship between the subject and the system, the light that floods the interior of the camera frame. Describing the phenomenon generated by his process, Takeda says that it is “evidence of its means, and is a mark of its existence.” He relativizes the premise that in photography the subject exists outside the camera’s system, being something that is objectified, with its image captured by the camera. His practice, in which he takes as his subject “the complex relationship between the means (camera) and the purpose (subject),” produces works that build on various types of experimentation conducted throughout the history of photography, as well as being beautiful, powerful, and intense. The exhibition presents approximately twenty works. At this time, we cordially invite you to attend “Lost in Translation” at KOSAKU KANECHIKA.

Now entering its eighth exhibition, the gallery is proud to present a new solo exhibition by artist Tomoya Tsukamoto, titled "Journey of Encounters", opening on Saturday, July 5, 2025.This exhibition is held in collaboration with Admira Gallery , a contemporary art gallery based in Hong Kong.Born in 1982 in Ishikawa Prefecture, and currently based in Kanagawa, Tomoya Tsukamoto is an active figure in the contemporary art scene. His practice is characterized by the use of an airbrush to apply countless ultra-fine dots, creating visual effects reminiscent of pointillism, while also incorporating dripping techniques and light, fluid brushstrokes to develop his distinctive painterly language.Tsukamoto’s signature approach involves layering red, blue, and yellow—the three primary colors—so that the viewer’s retina blends them optically, dissolving the boundary between figure and ground. Drawing inspiration from motifs such as cherry blossoms, koi fish, human silhouettes, and deer, his work explores cycles of light and shadow, life and death. In recent years, he has incorporated real plants as stencils and used negative/positive inversion techniques to reinterpret Georges Seurat’s color theory alongside the decorative sensibility of the Japanese Rinpa school, all through a contemporary lens. His paintings balance the intricacy of Japanese "kazari" aesthetics with a minimalist production process, inviting viewers into an immersive and contemplative visual experience. This exhibition marks Tsukamoto’s first solo show in Tokyo in 13 years, and is also his largest presentation of the year. We warmly invite you to Gallery & Bakery Tokyo 8min to encounter this poetic and multilayered body of work in person.

Yuka Kashihara vividly expresses the fundamental energy of the sea, the earth, and nature using colors with a sense of translucency, such as blue, pink, green, and brown. Although neither humans nor animals appear in her works, through the artist’s unique perspective, they seem to reflect the life force of something invisible, such as the trace of a former presence, the air, or the light, imbuing them with a mysterious power and stir, as if we had managed to steal a glimpse into another dimension. Kashihara spent three months in Okinawa, making sketches in various locations and using the memories she was aware of as the foundation for her work. During her stay there, picking up shells became part of her daily routine, and when she looked at the shells she had gathered, their patterns seemed to spread out and expand infinitely like some sort of landscape painting. According to Kashihara, it was a completely unnerving experience, where things she had previously been unable to see became connected to each other.

KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present Emi Mizukami’s solo exhibition “Dear All Our Yesterdays” from May 10th to June 21st, 2025.Emi Mizukami creates paintings that exist as an accumulation of temporal actions. Filling her canvases with imagery derived from old and contemporary mythologies and folklores from around the world, as well as historical fables and tragedies, the artist repeatedly paints new images over them, covering each layer with pigments mixed with sand. The multi-layered paintings born from this approach do not offer a static viewing experience to the human retina, but rather evoke various imaginations, such as the passage of time in ways unbeknownst to man, reality, and virtuality. This show will present about 17 new paintings.

Through a variety of media, Erika Kobayashi weaves together invisible subject matter, untold histories and personal memories, and emotions. Dorene Le Bas, who has Romani roots, develops multidisciplinary works inspired by the rich history and mythology of the Romani people and centered on themes of life, death, loss, and rebirth. While perceiving the act of writing and drawing as excavation, Hiraku Suzuki continues to explore the potential of drawing as a way of revealing specific conduits in space and time. This group exhibition explores each of the three artists’ respective practices as they reveal and give shape to that which is indiscernible, hidden, and marginalized, while also discovering points of connection with the world.

Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present Daido Moriyama / Sayre Gomez “Hellooooo,” a dialogue between the paintings and sculptures of American artist Sayre Gomez and the photography of Daido Moriyama. Both artists investigate the fundamentals of their respective cities, Los Angeles and Tokyo, which are deeply rooted in their work and represented by their distinct visual languages. Sayre Gomez has garnered recognition for his photorealistic paintings, which focus on fragments of the urban sprawl that is the Los Angeles landscape. His work questions concepts of history, memory, authenticity, and the ways in which we see and make meaning from our lived environment. Since moving from Osaka to Tokyo in his youth, Daido Moriyama has been documenting Shinjuku—the city he describes as “the first place that left him feeling completely at a loss”—for decades, beginning in the 1960s. Moriyama, who admits to being drawn to the “tingling” and chaotic energy of Shinjuku, captures the city’s representations and surfaces through his photography. This relentless pursuit of surface reality becomes the defining characteristic of his artistic practice.

Auto Moai began producing black and white works in 2015, and since 2018, it also uses a lot of color, and is known for its style where a highly anonymous “presence” stands on the screen. While being extremely objective, it is a style that can also be seen as a very personal scene, and presents scenery and scenes that can only be seen because necessary information, such as relationships between humans and the relationship between the work and the viewer, has been stripped down. This exhibition “Private Ritual” is Automoi's largest exhibition among the exhibitions to be held this year, and all new paintings will be presented. We will create a space where about 4 masterpieces from No. 130 are lined up. Please take a look at Gallery & Bakery Tokyo in 8 minutes.

Now 83 years old, Tuttle is one of the most important contemporary artists of our time. He has built a career spanning some 60 years and continues to work with a radical spirit of inquiry. As the artist himself says, “It is the invisible that is most interesting.”*1 Tuttle’s works are a fusion of philosophy, materials, colors, language, and spirituality that persistently confronts the nature of the world and the self. The new works in this exhibition are three-dimensional works that articulate various thought processes about numbers, concepts, and colors, and the invisible, all of which Tuttle has an abiding interest in, expressed through a lighthearted, rich worldview using everyday materials such as wood, paper, cloth, wire, plastic, and styrofoam. Tuttle continues to probe and question various issues through his work. This exhibition promises us the pleasure of spending time in the company of his work, and of vicariously experiencing the discovery of everything unexpected and interesting in each and every moment of this world. We hope you will join us in this experience of Richard Tuttle’s new worldview.

KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present Hiroto Tomonaga’s solo exhibition “Lightning” from March 22nd to May 2nd, 2025 at Kyobashi.Hiroto Tomonaga captures transitory moments in which things he is looking at appear to him ever so briefly as something else, and strives to render this in painting. In his practice, this change that occurs before his eyes gradually translates into paint on the canvas, becoming fixed on the surface. While the resulting paintings are fixed, they feel as if they might resume moving once again, and express the sense of helplessness the artist himself feels regarding the world he sees before him.The indeterminate nature of Tomonagaʼs art defies language and earthly logic, unsettling the world in which we live comfortable, albeit constrained, lives. In recent works, he has been building a sense of fullness that seems to jump off the painting surface, achieved by fixing onto a single canvas the numerous reactions that result from making different elements collide. This show, “Lightning,” will present about ten new paintings.

The artist COIN PARKING DELIVERY's new solo exhibition “GIVE ME TIME TO BLOOM” will be held from 2025/03/22 (Sat).COIN PARKING DELIVERY (COIN PARKING DELIVERY) started its activities in 2018 when using a smartphone during train travel time and started drawing pictures with your finger. It quickly attracted attention from various fields, and not only did she present her work at exhibitions as an artist, but she is also taking an approach with a wide range of expressions, such as installing public art and collaborating with major companies as part of town planning with the government. What is characteristic of COIN PARKING DELIVERY's work is pop characters that are easy to understand for all classes and a strong message.Suddenly, when you see the work, various layers have been added to it over and over again, and the viewer will naturally be drawn into the world of canvas. The entertainment that unfolds in that space seems to be constantly trying to express the modern dilemmas of “connection” and “love,” “humans” and “society,” and “production” and “consumption” from the viewpoint of COIN PARKING DELIVERY, which has received domestic and international evaluations over a short career, with motifs that are easy to understand.COIN PARKING DELIVERY announced the suspension of artist activities for 2 years on the occasion of a solo exhibition held in 2023, and focused on commercial activities. At this long-awaited exhibition, not only will sculptures be presented, but 13 new works, including the largest canvas ever, will be presented, making it the largest solo exhibition ever for the artist.

Tomio Koyama Gallery Kyobashi is pleased to present “good day,” a solo exhibition by German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol. This will be the artist’s fourth solo exhibition at Tomio Koyama Gallery and his first in six years, and will feature new works by the artist. People and animals that look like they could be from anywhere, but with something distinctive about their facial expression and demeanor. Stephan Balkenhol (1957-) has won international acclaim for his minimalist representations of figurative motifs in the form of standing figures and reliefs.Carved from the wood of a single tree along with the pedestal they stand on, the elaborate, rough surfaces of these works that retain strong traces of his chisel and their coloring leave a lasting impression. Balkenhol’s works have a rich appeal that elicits the humor and introspection of the viewer, as well as a presence that while not difficult, is somehow intriguing.

Yutaka Kikutake Gallery is pleased to present ‘Echo of Echoes’, two person show featuring Trevor Yeung and Yuko Mohri whose pavilions at the 60th Venice Art Biennale are still fresh in people’s minds. Sharing a cosmopolitan sensibility, these two artists developed their friendship through stays in Venice and Tokyo in preparation for this exhibition. The conversations they had and the scenes they witnessed during these times became the starting point for a shared process of gleaning the slightest details from everyday life, influences which can be seen in their work.Artists: Yuko Mohri, Trevor Yeung

KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present Yutaka Aoki’s solo exhibition “U” from January 18th to February 22nd, 2025 at Tennoz, and from January 25th to March 8th, 2025 at Kyobashi.Yutaka Aoki expands the scope of painting through an examination of the relationship between painting and the surrounding world, and through the many new possibilities that are born from that exchange. This exploration results in works that migrate freely between two- and three-dimensionality, and in works that respond not only to the material and production process, but also to their relationship with the audience’s gaze. Aoki’s approach also seeks to capture the ever-changing countenance of paintings, articulated as single moments along the axis of time.At the core of Aoki’s artistic work lies an awareness of the structure and phenomena of a world involving individual moments, time itself, and the countless things that lie in between, coupled with an exploration of the universal and fundamental issue of the flatness and materiality of painting. His exploration continues as each discovery gives way to a subsequent question to be addressed. In an Information Age in which various aspects of the world appear uniform, Aoki’s process of continually exploring things that defy simplistic categorization is evident in his practice. This exhibition features forty new works, with smaller works displayed at the Tennoz location, and larger pieces exhibited at the Kyobashi space. Together, these exhibits constitute Yutaka Aoki’s solo exhibition “U” at KOSAKU KANECHIKA.

Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of the works by Erwin Bohatsch, from Saturday, January 25 to Saturday, February 22. Bohatsch is recognized as a leading figure in Austrian art history, particularly in abstract painting. This marks his first presentation at the gallery and will feature nine paintings and thirteen works on paper from his recent oeuvre.Although Bohatsch has been pursuing a distinctly individual and exemplary path through his career, his work is inseparable from the discourse of Austrian art of the late 70s to 90s. In the early 80s, when he emerged in the Austrian art scene, his paintings carried all features of “New Painting”, depicting motifs in organic forms and bleak colors. At the time, he became a member of the “Neue Malerei” (New Painting) group and was considered as one of the artists of Neue Wilde (neo-expressionism). By the late 1980s, the artist departed from this current and entered on abstract reduction, eliminating the narrative, figurative and expressive qualities of the paintings. This shift signaled a commitment to openness and clarity, hallmarks of his mature style. The artist’s recent works exemplify his purist approach, emphasizing line, form, color, and materiality. Curved color planes, fine lines, and spontaneous marks combine to produce compositions rich with tension and rhythm. On the fields of earthy beige and black, bright colors such as green, yellow and blue are also used effectively within a limited area. The poured color, spread thinly with a spatula, forms a layer of translucent colored surfaces, creating new forms in the overlapping areas and sense of spatial depth on the painting.Bohatsch’s works, in which multiple spatial structures unfold, will offer viewers an open and engaging visual experience.

Ai Makita is based in Tokyo and New York. Her artwork aims to create organic images out of inorganic elements by using mechanical motifs. Also, her theme is to create material and physical works based on two-dimensional digital data. In particular, she aspires to bring digital images out into real space as paintings on canvas by composing artefacts such as metals and plastics photographed by herself. She has recently incorporated generative AI into the production of her artwork and her style is not limited to canvas paintings, but also includes video, prints and installations. The exhibition title “Form and Matter“ starts with Aristotle’s concept in Greek philosophy. We are pleased to feature Makita's new artworks that approach the theme using various methods of expression, such as paintings, prints, drawings, and video works.

Ai Makita new solo exhibition “ Form and Matter ”

During his first solo exhibition at our gallery, Kurata said that his practice could be read in terms of “worthlessness and beauty.” He has been producing work from a personal standpoint, in response to the question of whether life is devoid of meaning and worthless, forms of beauty that exist in spite of this, and the movements of our hearts and minds. The objects depicted in the new works on display at this exhibition have changed dramatically. Previously, Kurata’s motifs were mostly imagined from memory: dusk, the sea, night, cars, eggs, dogs, sleeping, and so on. Since moving to the suburbs where there are many elderly people several years ago, however, Kurata began to paint people, plants, nature, animals, and daytime scenes that he saw daily in his studio, home, and the surrounding areas as concrete subjects for his paintings.Kurata’s new work Night Waiting for Morning is a self-portrait of himself lying down in his studio, with succulent plants in the background that he actually grows. The paintings within this painting are images of his previous works. These works feel turbulent yet calm. Everything seems to be coincidental, and viewers feel as if something in them is related to them. Their humor, meanwhile, is somehow redeeming.

Taka Ishii Gallery is opening a new location in Kyobashi, at the center of Tokyo. To mark the opening of this new space, a group exhibition themed around portraits will be held from Saturday, November 2 to Saturday, December 14. This show will feature approximately 14 works by 11 artists.People now take images with their smartphones and upload them on social media, allowing them to see the faces of others at any time. Memorable moments with our family and friends can be accessed at any time via camera rolls or cloud services. Surveillance cameras capture offenders involved in an event, and their portraits from graduation albums are leaked and broadcast in the media. Before photographic technology, there were few ways to physically preserve how others looked. Pliny the Elder, the Roman naturalist, cites the myth that the origin of painting was the deed of a woman tracing the shadow of her lover before going to war, but such a time is difficult for us to imagine today. The visual experience associated with art has changed significantly along with it. Some people may follow artists’ social media accounts, where you can get a glimpse of their personalities. Others may obtain information about exhibitions online, confirming in advance which artists’ works are on display. In today's age of information transparency, there is also a method that dares to highlight “mysteries”. Not to mention the artist who leaves graffiti anonymously around the world, but there are also singers and idol groups that gain immense popularity without showing their faces. While there are those who are simply drawn to the work and the singer's voice, there is a wide range of reactions to such activities, including obsessive pursuit to somehow uncover their true identities. How do we respond when we see a work in front of us? The shape of a shadow changes depending on the angle from which light strikes it, and so does the variety of interpretations of a piece of art.【Participating artists】Nobuyoshi Araki, Tomoo Gokita, Goro Kakei, Sanya Kantarovsky, Naoto Kawahara, Graham Little, Ittetsu Matsuoka, Daido Moriyama, Kyoko Murase, Ser Serpas, Hiroka Yamashita

Tokyo Dialogue 2024 is the final year of the three-year project, Tokyo Dialogue 2022-2024. It is being jointly implemented by T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO and TODA CORPORATION, which has had its head office in Kyobashi, Tokyo for over 120 years. Every year, photographers and writers team up to create a “dialogue” set in Kyobashi through photos and words. The scene that began with the TODA BUILDING construction site 25 m. underground at the start of the project in 2022 has now reached a height that soars to the sky. In November 2024, the building will at last open as a new site for art and culture in Kyobashi. Through photos and words that move between the years, this project depicts a city continuously transforming from past to present and into the future.　　Artists :　Photographers　　IMAI Tomoki , UEDA Yaya , SUZUKI Nozomi 　Writers　　DOZONO Masahiko、AOYAGI Natsumi、FUJII AkariCurator : ODAKA Miho
